The CANON PowerShot S90 is a prosumer compact that could be defined as the "younger
sister" of the CANON PowerShot G11, the top-of-the-line of Canon compacts. The two cameras were
announced simultaneously in August 2009 and they essentially differ in style.
In fact the S90 has the typical flavor of a compact: no viewfinder, lighter
weight, smaller size, whereas the G11 shows a more "professional" body, optical
viewfinder with a zoom, double weight and larger size. But if you look at the
substance, the differences are minimal and only one is critical for

underwater shooting: the minimum focusing distance, which is as low as 1cm on the G11, compared to 5cm on the S90. The table below shows these differences: you can judge by yourself. As a matter of fact, the sensor and the software are the same, as well as the dialog with on-camera and external strobes. The comparison with the G11, considered by general consensus as the best compact usable underwater, hinges also on the price: the S90 is about 120-140 € less than the "elder sister", whereas housings are at the same price level. |
