The story of the Canon PowerShot G series starts on September 8, 2000: the G1 was a compact camera with a 3.34 megapixel sensor on 1/1.8”, lens from 35 to 102 mm equivalent, f2-2.5, and a 1.8” articulated display,  already at that time cassified as a semiprofessional product  (prosumer, that is). The series has reached today’s G12, and if the time rate of at least the last 5 models will be respected, the next one (G13?) should be presented between half August and half September of this year.  The series as of today consists of 10 models, because the G4 and the G8 have never been presented. One thing has remained basically constant since the beginning, and that’s the size of the sensor, with a slight increase when from 1/1.8” of the models from 1 to 7,  the G9 moved to the current 1/1.7”. The megapixels have increased gradually  until the G10, which reached the 14 Mp threshold, to go back to 10 with the G11 and the G12, to regain a better signal/noise ratio. A significant step up took place with the transition from G9 to G10, not so much because of the Megapixel increase, but because of the lens change, moving from a 35-210 equivalent to a 28-140, more versatile thanks to the wider focal. The G series has always been at the top of the standings in its market sector, but currenly a strong competition surrounds the G12, mostly from the Panasonic LX5 and its twin Leica D-lux5, from the Nikon P7000, very similar also in the architecture of the body, the Sea&Sea (Ricoh) DX-2G, and the brand new XZ-1 from Olympus, which beats the competition in terms of lens luminosity
with its f1.8.
All the cameras benefit from in-house or third-party housings, and constitute allready a well defined and qualitatively appreciated sector,  thanks also to the compactness they offer. Even the accessory market has valued this type of cameras, and many third parties produce not only external strobes, but also macro add-ons and dedicated wideangles, to the point that each can constitute the basis for a whole photographic system, allowing us to obtain results of a definitley superior quality, compared to the simpler and cheaper point-and-shoot cameras. In the last 5 years, the G series has renewed itself every year, and our question is: to what extent such a fast model turnover made the previous versions obsolete? We can answer, with little doubt, that few camera models have proved so resilient to technological evolution to remain up-to-date for so many years. Today quite a lot of G9’s, G10’s and G11’s are still in use, but even older models, which not only still shoot beautiful pictures in their housings, but also represent a  very good investment on the second-hand market. Today you can easily get a G9 or a G10 with housing, 2007-2008 stuff, at € 3-400, with little risk of buying a dinosaur. The same resoning can apply to the G12: the fact that in 6 months almost certainly a new model will come up should not really be a problem, because its features make sure that it will remain  perfectly adequate for many years to come. The table below shows a comparison of the last 5 cameras of the G series, with differences highlighted.
